The FFRL "Chase for the Cup" is a play-off type format used in both the Sportsman and Magnum Cup Series, both our main Cup features.  For the first 25 events (Sportsman) and 26 (Magnum), drivers compete in overall points to become eligible for the Chase feature.  Those who don't make the point spread, have a backup policy for possible entry.  And drivers who still remain out of the Chase feature, still compete for first "Outside the Chase" position.  Guaranteeing competition throughout the season regardless of your experience level.

In each of the two series, the winner of the "Chase for the Cup" is crowned Cup Champion of that series.  Along with your Cup Champion, 2nd place in the "Chase" format is also recognized.  And finally, for those who did not enter the Chase, 1st place for "Outside the Chase".  All three winner will be recognized at the awards ceremony at season end.

CHASE FOR THE CUP - SETUP
At the conclusion of event six in each of the series, the point spread is figured on the active roster that is currently running in each.  Each driver is recognized as 40 points with a maximum of 400 total points.  If 15 drivers are registered; 15 x 40 = 600, but max is set at 400.  If 7 drivers; 7 x 40 = 280 points.  At the end of the 25th or 26th event, and you fit within that point spread from the current overall points leader, Congratulations, you are guaranteed entry into the "Chase for the Cup".

Some will not make the "guaranteed" entry due to real life situations.  A couple provisionals can hinder a points status quickly.   And for those who fit into that category, the FFRL has implemented a backup policy, new to the 2007 season.  The backup policy is set in stages.  The first requirement is the driver must have participated in 80% of the schedule "point" events.

Magnum Cup: 26 events X 80% = 21 events.
Sportsman Cup: 25 events X 80% = 20 events.

Each of the series allows up to five provisionals and still have the opportunity to enter the "Chase for the Cup".  Once that requirement has been met, they fall into stage 2.  In the table below, the driver must fall into one of the sections to enter the Chase with the backup policy:

A. 50% of races in top 5's PLUS 0 wins (13 (rounded UP) top 5's + 0 wins)
B. 33% of races in top 5's. PLUS 1 win (9 (rounded UP) top 5's + 1 win).
C. 25% of races in top 5's PLUS 2 wins (6 (rounded DOWN) top 5's + 2 wins).

Drivers unable to make the requirements continue to shoot for 1st place "Outside the Chase".  All drivers not in the "Chase for the Cup" will continue with their current point system.

CHASE FOR THE CUP - POINT EXPLANATION

During the season, an overall point and scoring is posted on this website under it's current Series. Overall points are updated after each race until the last race of the season. Even Chase contenders will be included in this. Those entering the "Chase" will find themselves added to another scoring system. Each driver starts with 5000 points heading into their first race. Pending on where they stand on the overall point system, bonus points are awarded in 5 point increments. The following is an example with five Chase contenders:.

In OVERALL Points: Bonus Points Received:
First Place +20
Second Place +15
Third Place +10
Fourth Place +5
Fifth Place +0

If the fourth and fifth place drivers entered the "Chase" using the backup policy and were actually 9th and 10th in overall standings, they would still receive the bonus points listed due to them being the fourth and fifth entries.

CHASE FOR THE CUP - NOTE
Unlike NASCAR, there is NOT a guaranteed number of drivers who can/cannot enter the Chase.  The FFRL Chase is purely based on overall performance and point evaluation.
